THOSE RACCOONS ATE OUR LUCI LIGHT

We went glamping at Lake Sonoma for my birthday weekend. Okay, not really, but it was definitely a more luxurious camping trip than usual. We filled our time with some wine-tasting, sun-soaked napping, lake-floating, and general bumming around.

However, the weekend did not begin quite as smoothly as we had hoped. Although the hike in was a super short and easy stroll, about mid-way through it, we were swarmed by mosquitoes and having forgotten to apply repellent before we started, a massive panic ensued. There might have been some aimless running, cursing, and blind flailing for a bit, but we eventually managed to shower ourselves with Deet. Unfortunately, the damage had already been done. These mosquitoes were insanely aggressive and by the time it was over, I realized they had almost eaten me alive.

Once we got to the camp site, we gathered our remaining dignity and set up our tents in a beautiful and picturesque lakefront setting. These walk-in campsites all have picnic tables, fire rings, and even porta-potties. And luckily, the mosquitoes, although still present, were less of a problem once there was a gentle breeze.

We did have a few fellow campers in adjacent sites, but our most disruptive neighbor turned out to be a couple of hungry raccoons. They kept scurrying around our table while we ate dinner so we made sure to hang our food items out of their reach before we turned in for the night. However, they refused to be deterred from their mission and decided that a plastic Luci light was an edible feast. We awoke in the morning to find a series of teeth marks on the plastic light which luckily did not destroy its operability.

Despite the initial mosquito horror show, the weekend turned into a wonderfully lazy and relaxing couple of days which we capped off with a requisite Russian River soak.
